Sinkholes: Does Your Home Insurance Cover Them?
A sinkhole is a natural depression in the Earth, often caused by water. While they are most common in Florida, they do occur in other places… including Marietta, GA. Earlier this week, the front yard of a home in the Atlanta suburb literally caved in. Fortunately, it did not appear to have caused too much physical damage to this homeowner’s dwelling or physical property. I had a chance to speak with her but I kept it very brief – I can’t imagine waking up to something like this. Here is a quick video explaining how this would relate to your home insurance…
Unfortunately, land is not something that is included in your homeowner’s policy – it is just not something you can typically insure. In some cases, you can buy a land stability endorsement that will cover shifting of the soil. But that is only with a few select companies.
If you would like to see more detailed footage of the sinkhole at this home, please watch the video on WSBTV’s website. I’m just an insurance agent armed with a flip cam. They’ve got the big guns. Hmmm… maybe we could partner up sometime!
*Footnote – WSBTV was back on the scene while I was there, but they declined my offer to speak with them. Maybe next time…
