Atlanta Insurance Live! #29: Real Life Scenarios

by Chris on August 12, 2010

If you are in an auto accident, you need to know what steps to take afterwards. Insurance, police reports, etc.

The names and faces have been changed to protect the identity of these accident victims… Understanding that accidents happen every day here in Atlanta (big and small) it is important for me to give you some suggestions on what to do in the event of an accident. When should you call your insurance company? Who is at fault? What’s next?

Below are some real steps you should take, just in case I rambled in the video:

  1. After the accident, get the other driver’s information (full name, insurance information, and tag number)
  2. Contact the police and ambulance (if needed). Take photographs, and track down witnesses.
  3. If it is a minor accident, move your vehicles out of the way of traffic.
  4. Talk to the police once they arrive and provide as much information as possible.
  5. Call your insurance agent immediately.
  6. Let the agent and your insurance company guide you in your next steps.
  7. Go home and put your feet up. It’s been a bad day…

As always, thanks for watching! See you all next week!

Atlanta Classic Car Insurance: The Allure of the Automobile

Do you own an antique car? A real collectors item? If so, you need something different than the auto insurance policy you have on your ’05 Tacoma. Seriously. You need things like agreed-value coverage, flexible usage, spare parts coverage, inflation guard, and if you are a serious collector who is always adding to your collection you need automatic coverage for additions.

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta just opened up an exhibit called The Allure of the Automobile. My friend, Randy Barnes got some tickets to this and we went down to check out the goods! So check out the video and the pictures that follow! I took pictures of most of the collection so if you’re interested, or if you want a quote on some insurance!

Atlanta Insurance Live! #34 .The Sinkhole.

by Chris on January 29, 2010

Sinkholes: Does Your Home Insurance Cover Them?

A sinkhole is a natural depression in the Earth, often caused by water. While they are most common in Florida, they do occur in other places… including Marietta, GA. Earlier this week, the front yard of a home in the Atlanta suburb literally caved in. Fortunately, it did not appear to have caused too much physical damage to this homeowner’s dwelling or physical property. I had a chance to speak with her but I kept it very brief – I can’t imagine waking up to something like this. Here is a quick video explaining how this would relate to your home insurance…

Unfortunately, land is not something that is included in your homeowner’s policy – it is just not something you can typically insure. In some cases, you can buy a land stability endorsement that will cover shifting of the soil. But that is only with a few select companies.

If you would like to see more detailed footage of the sinkhole at this home, please watch the video on WSBTV’s website. I’m just an insurance agent armed with a flip cam. They’ve got the big guns. Hmmm… maybe we could partner up sometime!

*Footnote – WSBTV was back on the scene while I was there, but they declined my offer to speak with them. Maybe next time…

One Important Insurance Tip for First Time Home buyers!

As a licensed Insurance Agent I want to use this platform to address a peeve of mine. And that is when a first time buyer is referred to me and they tell me that their lender, Realtor, or Appraiser says that they need “X” amount of coverage on their house. The insurance coverage A, the actual insurance amount for your new house is not something that they can determine. Sure, coverage is required before closing and they may have a deductible requirement… but when it comes to the actual amount of insurance; that is to be determined by the insurance company and your agent (the Insurance one).

The bottom line… when you are buying a home insurance policy for the first time, listen to the Insurance Agent and nobody else. I’m bringing this up because you’d be surprised how many times new buyers come to me after being given wrong information when it comes to the insurance part of the home buying process.

Are you unsure about the information you’ve been given? Call me.

Did you know that you can easily add your computers and mobile devices to your home insurance policy!?

In big cities like Atlanta, we rely heavily on our iPhones, blackberries, and laptop computers to get us through the day. Whether it is business or personal, these items are becoming a staple of our society.

Many people are not aware of this, but your home insurance company normally offers you an additional coverage option to get increased coverage for these items. In most cases, you will find that these special endorsements will provide comprehensive, worldwide coverage for these devices.

Atlanta Insurance Live! #28 – A HOT tip!

by Chris on December 11, 2009

Put savings to the side for a minute, Atlanta; How is your auto insurance policy really working for you?

Everyday we are bombarded with insurance ads telling us how much we can save by switching to ____________ insurance company. I’m on my soap box today to emphasize that, while savings are important, they are irrelevant if the coverage is not adequate in a time of need.

25,000/50,000/25,000 – the state minimum here in Georgia for auto insurance liability coverage. That first number, 25k is how much your insurance company would pay for one person’s medical bills if you were at fault in the accident that caused their injuries. $25,000? That could easily be spent in just a few nights in the hospital. What would you do if total damages equaled $60,000? Pay out of pocket?

I’m not posting this as a scare tactic; I don’t believe in that. I’m posting this because it is real.

If you’re insurance policy does not provide you with adequate coverage, then the premium you are paying is simply money wasted. Period.

This week I’ve been talking about life insurance. I intended to upload a video here from one of my favorite online resources for life insurance, the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education. They are really a great, unbiased resource for life insurance information. When I got to their You Tube page, I discovered that they don’t allow third parties to use their videos – understandable. So instead of adding a video, I’m going to just give you a link to the video I wanted to share: http://www.lifehappens.org/reallifestories/wandall

It is a story about a young family that encountered tragedy, and it is very uplifting to see what life insurance has done for them and their community.

I usually try to entertain while I inform here on Atlanta Insurance Live… but I do take insurance, particularly life insurance, very seriously. I want to share this resource with you and hope you’ll take time to watch some of the other videos they provide as well. Please bookmark their site and use it as a resource too. There is a wealth of great information there.

I’m linking up to this stuff, not as a scare tactic, but because it really is important to understand the consequences of life insurance… both good and bad.

Wow, so it felt weird to step away from the camera. I’ll be back next time. Take care everyone.

Helping you understand the term “Full Coverage” when considering your auto insurance options:

I think the term full coverage can be a somewhat misleading term in the sense that anything can really happen out there. Say you get into an accident and the extent of the damages are outside of your coverage limits. In that case, you are not fully covered. Please don’t mistake the term for some sort of guarantee that you are covered no matter what! But this is actually sort of a side not.

In the following video, I’ll explain what full coverage means to you:

Atlanta Insurance Live 17: New Media Atlanta

by Chris on September 30, 2009

Atlanta Insurance, Atlanta Auto Insurance

Last week I had the experience of going to the New Media Atlanta Conference held at Georgia Tech. The conference was put together by friends Brad Nix and Matt Fagioli, and was designed to take a close look at the way businesses are using social media (facebook, twitter, etc.) for business and customer service. Chris Brogan (best-selling author and founder of New Marketing Labs) was the keynote speaker (scroll to the bottom of this page to watch his entire presentation), and the event had a full lineup of representatives from many large companies, a few of the most notable including Turner Broadcasting and Newell Rubbermaid. The main topic of discussion was the way these companies are incorporating social media into their business strategies to build deeper communication channels with customers.

I had intentions of capturing a lot of footage to upload here on Atlanta Insurance Live! and I did capture some, but I realized that others captured the event much better than I could… after all, I’m just an insurance agent. Below you will find a few different videos from the conference, and I’ve also added a link so you can watch the entire conference if you’re really curious! I’ve even created a BackNoise channel called AtlantaInsuranceLive if you want to give me your opinions about how I am using social media for my business… and I know you have an opinion!

Below is a short video that I put together. I may win an award for Best Director… we’ll see. I wanted a few friends to get their shout-outs, and I found it powerful how Shaun King and Hope Atlanta are using social media to help flood victims.

Below are two additional clips from friend Steve Burns, covering highlights of the event. Great job here Steve!

Run Level Media did an outstanding job capturing Chris Brogan’s moment on stage…

And of course… follow this link if you want to see the entire conference.

Atlanta Insurance Live 14: My Story

Atlanta Insurance Live! Auto, Home, Life, and Business Insurance – Done differently!

I wanted to share a little about me with you and how/why I started this project. I want to encourage anyone wanting to start a business, blog, project (whatever you want to call it) to just do it. I talk to a lot of people all the time who have great ideas and big goals but they never take the first step. That first step feels more like a jump, but if you don’t jump you’re only going to remain in a stand still. There are endless opportunities and niches out there to break into… so just go do it!

Here is the link I reference in the video: Unemployed Graduate in Sandwich Board Job Hunt

And while I’m thinking about motivation, the video below is something I have referred to many times since first seeing the story air on the 2005 Espy Awards on ESPN. Whenever I think I have huge challenges, I watch this and it puts it all into perspective. Sandwich-board guy’s story and my story don’t even compare to this. In fact it is such a good story that it doesn’t really belong on the same page with Sandwich-board guy and me, but I’ve included it anyway. We’ve got it super easy… my guess is that you do too. But that’s the point of me sharing this with you. Stop what you’re doing right now and go make “it” happen!

Do you know what is most important when considering your Atlanta Insurance purchase?

I have narrowed down the top five things a person or business needs to consider when purchasing insurance or changing their insurance plan:

  1. Financial Stability of the Company – This is the most important item on my list. It is very important to make sure that your insurance carrier has a strong financial rating (A- or better). I will get into financial ratings in another post.
  2. The ability and timeliness of claims being paid – This sort of goes with number one, because financial ratings will have a lot to do with a companies ability to pay out a claim. Another thing to consider is the timeliness and convenience of when and how claims are paid. Some carriers provide concierge claims centers, others send an adjuster. Both are good, just make sure your company has a strong record of awarding claims fast.
  3. How well does the coverage meet your needs? – Very important. Before you purchase an insurance policy, make sure that the agent has explained how and why the selected coverage options meet your needs. Thoroughly review your insurance quote and ask every question that is unclear to you. Having inadequate coverage can really hurt if you ever have a major claim, and having too much coverage can result in spending thousands of dollars unnecessarily.
  4. Price and Price Stability – Obviously, price is a major factor in your decision. Be sure however, to consider price stability. How much does the premium change over time? Insurance premiums will always fluctuate… but be sure that you aren’t purchasing a policy just because the price is low. Many companies will make a Market Investment and lower the price to capture a large percentage of the marketplace, than rapidly increase those premiums over the next year or two. Bottom line is important, but DO NOT shop just on price.
  5. Level of Service Provided by You Agent – This is my favorite. Make sure your agent and agency are providing you with a level of service that you are comfortable with. Judge this on how quickly you get a response, and how helpful the agent is when assisting you if there is a problem (be it billing OR claim). It is important to find an insurance agent that you are comfortable working with because it is likely that you will be paired up for the long run.

Follow all five of these guidelines and you are certain to make a good decision on your next insurance purchase!

Home Improvements Affect Homeowner’s Insurance

Have you evaluated your Atlanta homeowner’s insurance policy since you made major upgrades to your home?

I wanted to post something quickly about an issue that most people do not consider when they do major renovations to their homes… Evaluate you homeowner’s insurance policy!

Homeowner’s insurance covers the cost to replace your dwelling. The amount listed on your policy does not cover the land, it is not necessarily the market value of your home, and it may not cover major home improvement projects.

The bottom line is that If your home is valued at 250k and you make 40k in upgrades, then you need to evaluate your insurance situation!

Atlanta Insurance Live: What to Replace after a House Fire.

Something that homeowners need to understand is the importance of taking an inventory of their personal property…

A Google search for “homes destroyed by fire” yielded me 10 results in the first two pages of homes that were destroyed by fire in the month of May. These things can happen without prior warning and the feelings of loss and devastation are surely overwhleming. Fortunately, we have our homeowner’s insurance policy to help us pick up the pieces.

I hate to paint such an ugly picture, but the facts speak volumes… there are nearly half a million house fires in the U.S. each year. Unfortunately, the number seems to be rising. The good news is that the statisitics resulting from injuries and deaths related to these fires seems to be decreasing. http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/statistics/national/residential.shtm

One thing that I always stress with my policyholders is the importance of taking an inventory of your personal property. It seems like a tall order, but it is quite easy and quick to take this important step. Simply get a camcorder or digital camera and record everything you own. Go room to room and make a record of everything. Take this disc and put it in a fire proof safe box. Also, collect important receipts and other vital paperwork (birth certificates, car titles, deeds, etc.) and keep these things in that same safe.

While you are conducting your annual spring cleaning this year, take an hour to inventory your household items and organize important paperwork. A house fire can take a drastic toll on us emotionally… having your belongings inventoried can make things a little easier during recovery.
Please share this with someone you know!

Atlanta Insurance: Save Money on Auto Insurance

I want to share some easy ways to save on your auto insurance.

First of all, you should have your insurance policy reviewed by your agent every few years. Insurance companies are always changing how they “rate” policies and if you have had your policy in force for more than a year, chances are you are not getting the best rate.

Another way to save on your car insurance is to increase your deductibles. If your deductibles are at 250, raise them to 500… and if they are at 500 you might want to consider raising them to 1000. If you have NOT had an at fault accident in the last five years, I highly recommend having a 1000 collision deductible. If you need some help understanding your auto insurance policy, see my post on it here.

There are some other discounts available as well. Often times, you will save by having more than one car on your policy. This is commonly known as a multi-car discount and most carriers offer this (it is something that is already included if you have more than one car). You will also get a break for having more than one policy with the same company – the multi-policy discount. You hear all about this on most every insurance commercial you see!

Lastly, you can save by taking a state sponsored defensive driving course. However, unless you have a CLEAR driving record, this discount may not apply so ask your carrier.

Contact me to find out if you are receiving all the savings you can. I usually save drivers anywhere from $200 to $500 per year!
